STATE services battled throughout the entire day yesterday as more heavy rains fell across the island, flooding dozens of dwellings and causing traffic havoc.

No injuries were reported, although a few people trapped in their homes and vehicles came close to drowning.

‘Send draft dodgers to do social work’

PARENTS of conscripts serving in the National Guard yesterday warned parliament that immediate measures were needed to tackle draft dodging, which was constantly worsening.

It is said that one in five conscripts are draft dodgers, most exploiting an apparently weak screening system by citing psychological problems.

The postman never rang once

AROUND 100 Limassol postmen went on a 24-hour strike yesterday in protest over what they said were unacceptable working conditions and the state’s failure to meet their demands despite assurances.

Assessing the damage

INTERIOR Minister Neoklis Sylikiotis said it would take around 10 days to record all the damage following the recent heavy rainfall and assess how those affected will be compensated.

“Alambra was among the communities that were the most affected,” he explained. “A large number of homes and businesses were damaged, including equipment and furnishings.”

Finance Ministry welcomes tax agreement with Russia

THE MINISTRY of Finance has welcomed the approval by the Russian government of an agreement on the avoidance of double taxation initialled between the two countries earlier this year.

In April Cyprus and the Russian Federation initialled an agreement to avoid double taxation between them, paving the way for Cyprus’ removal from the Russian tax black list.
