THE LEADERS of DISY and EDEK have called for a hardening of Cyprus’ stance regarding Turkey’s candidacy to join the EU, ahead of the progress report by the European Commission (EC) which will be presented in its preliminary form tomorrow and finalised in December.

CY unions to decide today on strike action

CYPRUS AIRWAYS (CY) unions will meet today to decide whether to go on strike if the government goes ahead and supports Eurocypria financially.

The row is over a plan by the government, which owns 100 per cent of charter firm Eurocypria, to restructure the airline, which may involve the injection of an additional €35 million.

Tuition fees bill ready, says minister

EDUCATION Minister Andreas Demetriou yesterday confirmed that the Legal Services have sent him a draft bill on the tuition fees of private universities.

He said the bill provides that private universities are obliged to submit details of the tuition fee to the Ministry for approval six months before the beginning of the academic year.

THE AGRICULTURAL Research Institute (ARI) has invited a truffle expert from Greece to train staff in using a dog to hunt truffles, in anticipation of the final stages of a four-year experiment to cultivate the highly desirable – and valuable – fungi in Cyprus.

Two thirds of all imported cars being clocked

A CAR MILEAGE checking firm yesterday released figures showing that two thirds of all imported cars had had their mileage fraudulently reduced, or ‘clocked’.

According to Mileage Check, “Recent evidence shows that over 62 per cent of all cars imported into Cyprus have been clocked on arrival.”
