Garoyian outlines global efforts on Cyprus problem

PARLIAMENT IS making huge efforts on an international and European level to create the leverage that will promote Cyprus’ national issue abroad, House President Marios Garoyian.

Garoyian, who was recounting the parliamentary progress report, said he had already planned a visit to Brussels in November, “for self-explanatory reasons”.

He was referring to Turkey’s progress report for its EU accession process, scheduled to take place in December.

Garoyian also congratulated the new Prime Minister of Greece, George Papandreou, and referred to the “many provocations” ahead for Cyprus and Greece to protect their countries’ vital interests.

Referring to the parliamentary progress report, the House Speaker said the Cyprus problem was naturally at the centre of all activities.

“The President as well as MPs informed their counterparts on latest developments, as well as secondary aspects of the problem, underlining the Greek Cypriot side’s insistence and commitment to achieving a commonly-agreed, operative and viable solution, for a bizonal, bicommunal federation, based on high-level agreements, the related UN resolutions and principles of the European Union,” said Garoyian.

But Cypriot MPs, he added, have also reported Turkey for violating international justice in Cyprus.

“This resulted in the adoption of decisions, resolutions, recommendations and other supportive measures for our side and condemnation of Turkey’s positions,” said Garoyian.

He said there were many things going on that haven’t been announced yet, “As what’s important is to have results and then announce them, and not shout about them beforehand without caring about the final outcome.”
