Where are the Limassol police?

I’ve just returned home from a holiday in Limassol with my wife. We had a great time, the weather was fantastic, food really good, the hotel was first class and everyone who served us in the shops and restaurants were all very friendly and helpful.

I do have question about Limassol, does it have a police service?

After dinner in the evening, we would take a walk along the road that runs along the sea front. Most evenings, and particularly on a Saturday, this road is used as a race track by locally registered cars driven by young men. The combination is sporty car, loud exhaust, rear spoiler, spot lights on and windows down playing loud music.

They weave in and out of the traffic at high speed, engines revving looking for a Formula 1 start from
the traffic lights.

As a retired police officer, I know that this combination is an accident waiting to happen, it only needs two of them to collide and spin off into one of the bars or restaurants and the result will be serious injuries.

I only saw one police car during my seven days in Limassol, they appeared to cruising along, enjoying the sunshine – oblivious to what was happening around them. They had the blue lights flashing but were clearly not on an emergency call, I’ve never seen this in any other country I’ve visited, do the blue lights flashing mean “Leave me alone, I’m busy?”

The police need to take proactive action to stamp out this dangerous practice, set up road checks on the road, pull in every car doing it and issue the drivers with a warning and fine.

Many visitors I spoke to remarked that they were afraid to walk along this road at night because of the antisocial behaviour of these young drivers, this will result in Limassol getting a bad name for road safety and tourists not visiting the town.
