Tornado hits Nicosia

A TORNADO accompanied by hailstone and rain yesterday wreaked havoc in Nicosia injuring at least 17 people, tearing off roofs and water tanks, and uprooting trees.

The tornado started in the Latsia area, hit the Nicosia to Limassol motorway and then turned towards Aglandja and Pallouriotissa, the police said.

Search for missing British chef moves to Cyprus

POLICE investigating the disappearance of British woman Claudia Lawrence who has been missing for six months, have said she could be in Cyprus.

A spokeswoman for North Yorkshire police told The Cyprus Mail yesterday that four of their officers had arrived on the island on Wednesday. The officers are talking to British nationals who knew Lawerence, as part of their investigation.

THE NATIONAL COUNCIL (NC) yesterday ended its four-day marathon meeting with a joint resolution, which confirms the Greek Cypriot side’s basic principles and goals for a solution to the Cyprus problem.

Drymou council rejects allegations of wanton destruction

DRYMOU’S village leader Socrates Socratous has blasted reports by the Group for the Protection of Ancient Trees (OPADE) that the construction of village council offices on Drymou cliff will destroy the area’s ecological and archaeological treasures.

Socratous insisted that the claims are unfounded and that the building will cause no harm to his village.

More arrests in fake marriage scams

A MAN posing as a lawyer has been arrested in connection with an alleged fake marriage that took place last year, police said yesterday.

A 27-year-old Russian man involved in the case has been remanded in custody for six days.

The case was discovered by the immigration service last Sunday.

Hunters assault residents when asked to leave

A GROUP OF hunters violently assaulted and threatened to shoot residents, including a 56-year- old woman for interrupting their illegal shoot in the Famagusta area, on Tuesday, the couple said yesterday.

The attack took place around 5pm after the couple demanded two men stop shooting within range of their homes. 

Two sides needs to work together on environment

BRITISH HIGH Commissioner, Peter Millett, stressed the importance of environment protection at a reception on Wednesday night, saying that “protection of the environment requires close co-operation between the two sides”.

English School to mark Muslim holidays

THE ENGLISH School in Nicosia has added two extra holidays to its calendar this school year, commemorating Muslim holy days.

The English School will now be closed on the Muslim holy days of Ramazam Bayram (Eid ul Fitr) on Monday September 21, and Kurban Bayram (Eid al Adha) on November 27.

ECHR: inhuman and degrading treatment of missing persons

THE EUROPEAN Court of Human Rights (ECHR) yesterday delivered its final verdict on the case ‘Varnava and Others v. Turkey’, deeming Turkey’s treatment of nine missing persons and their relatives as inhuman, degrading and a violation of their right to life.
