IRISH BARS and clubs across the island have geared up for today’s big showdown between Cyprus and Ireland.

Predictions about the number of Ireland fans coming to watch the big match have ranged from 2,000 to 4,500. However, if the last game is anything to go by, when 18,500 arrived, it could be a lot more.

Old bangers withdrawal programme ends

NEARLY 24,000 old bangers were taken off the road between 2008 and 2009, the Transport Ministry said yesterday at the end of the incentive scheme for this year.

The Ministry said yesterday it was uncertain whether state budgetary provision will be made for the continuation of the programme.

THE DRY bed of the Limnaria river, which runs from Konia roundabout down to the Debenhams store in Paphos, is almost completely backed up with rubbish.

Local councillor, Vassos Demitriou, believes court action should be taken against the irresponsible people who are illegally dumping and fly tipping here.

Cancer charity event to be dedicated to young soprano

THE THIRD Gala concert to promote breast cancer awareness, which is held in Paphos, will be dedicated to the memory of soprano Marilena Solomou, who died in August.

Solomou, 35, had performed at all three previous concerts and was herself diagnosed with the disease in February 2006.The concert will raise funds to go towards the sunflower SMS breast cancer reminder service.

Turtle births booming

OVER 30,000 baby turtles were hatched in Cyprus last year, accord to the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research.

Around 12,000 Green Turtles and Caretta Caretta were released from the protected nests in the Lara-Toxeftra area and 18,000 to 20,000 thousand Caretta Caretta from the protected nests in Chrysochous Bay.

Stamp of personal approval

CYPRUS Postal Services have finally caught up with the ‘smile’ trend already popular in countries such as the USA and Australia, offering personalised stamps with the sender’s picture on them. The new service became available in Cyprus this week and has already gained the thumbs-up from local philatelic organisations.
