So much for the Cypriot sense of fair play

With regards Mr Loizou’s article (Sunday Mail August 9) titled “Time to stop the ‘them and us’ rhetoric”, in which he claims Enoch Powell was chairman of the Conservative party in 1988. In fact Enoch Powell had not been a member of the conservative party for over a decade in 1988; the chairman at the time was Peter Brooke.

In fact Enoch Powell has never been chairman of the conservative party. Still, lets not let the facts get in the way of our prejudices. As for Mr Loizou’s childish suggestion that Mr Davis “emigrate to another country” – perhaps he is in the position of many hundreds of cheated ex-pats who would dearly like to leave Cyprus but can’t due to inability to sell houses that they have paid large amounts of money for but which they (apparently) don’t own.

If Mr Loizou had paid €200,000 for a house in the UK (say), subsequently to find that he could not obtain deeds for the property, and indeed that the developer had remortgaged the property – then I wonder how he would respond to being told to stop complaining and emigrate if he didn’t like it?

So much for the Cypriot sense of fair play. As the (surely irrelevant) bit about the current MP expenses issues – at least in the UK a system is in place which enables such activities to come to light.

Somehow I doubt that the same exists in Cyprus. If you think that your own elected honourables don’t have their snouts in the trough then you are a very naive individual my friend.
