A BRITISH couple’s struggle to conceive has brought them to Cyprus, where they say laws and attitudes are more relaxed when it comes to in vitro fertilisation (IVF).

Keith and Libby Wilkin spoke to the BBC about the near impossibility of them receiving adequate treatment in the UK, especially after three failed IVF attempts – one on the NHS and two privately.

The especially long waiting lists, made worse by a UK law making it obligatory for the sperm or egg donor to reveal their identities, have forced the couple into seeking alternative ways to achieve their dream.

A TURKISH Cypriot man was briefly detained by police in the north after draping himself in a Cyprus Republic flag and parading around occupied Famagusta.

According to Turkish Cypriot daily Afrika, Korai Basdogroulmaci took the initiative to display his allegiance to the Republic of Cyprus after a night of drinking on Sunday.

Power-cut in Nicosia

MOST OF old Nicosia, including parts of busy Ledra St, was blacked out for over an hour in the early evening yesterday. The total power cut started around 6.20pm, ending just after 7.15pm.

Works halted

SEWERAGE work under way in the Paphos village of Chlorakas will be halted for the month of August, the busiest month of the year for visitors to the island.

The decision was taken by the Paphos sewerage board, to try and ease pressure on the area, which is popular with visitors to Paphos and is home to many of the seaside towns’ hotels and holiday complexes.
