After 20 years, this could be our last holiday in Cyprus

My wife and I have been coming to Cyprus for 20 years throughout that time we have truly enjoyed our time.
We lived in Limassol for two years and our second daughter was born in Cyprus, so it’s like a second home to us. We are now retired and save all year so we can look forward to our next holiday.

However, we feel we must write and tell you about our holiday in June. The last two years we have stayed at the Hotel Miramare and enjoyed it, the price for 2009 was £400 per person more than last year. The difference could have paid for one of us to have another two weeks in 2010, so we booked for two weeks at the Kanika Pantheon instead.

We hired a small car for four days for €45 a day – the same car in the UK is £12.99. They also charged me an extra €20 because I am 66 years old. Then they wanted another €43 for a full tank of petrol, which I did not accept and brought the car back with a full tank.

The following day, I had to put 16 litres in and we only went to Paphos harbour. Then another €20 to go to Larnaca and Troodos. So much for a full tank.

In Paphos in a harbour caf? a Nescafe Coffee was €5 – in Larnaca €4. I must recommend the Amenti Caf? on Larnaca seafront as the fairest deal – Nescafe Coffee €1.50 and a pint €1.95. Food was also very reasonable.
How they can charge €4 in one place and €1.50 only 50m along the road for the same beverage beats me…

Like I said, we are retired now and we normally return to our hotel about 10pm and sit on the balcony enjoying the nice warm evenings. However, at the Kanika Hotel this was shattered by big powerful motorbikes revving and racing. Some on one wheel along the seafront – this went on until well after midnight.

A Scottish couple staying at the same hotel were spending their first time in Cyprus and were staying for one week. They were in their late 50s and the wife would not leave the hotel at night because she was frightened to cross the road for fear of the bikes and fast cars.

We do not mind paying entrance fees into places of interest. We realise that the money goes to improving and maintenance of these sites. I would like to say that over the years Cyprus has done a really good job on improving them. Well done.

Seafront Limassol – the new sea wall and prom, it’s a fantastic job. But from the jetty to the palmed promenade, the beaches are in a terrible state: plastic bottles, carrier bags, cans, glass bottles and crisp bags all are in the sea.

While at the Kanika, we went to see some friends that were staying at the Miramare hotel. We ordered two shandies costing us €10. A fortnight’s holiday works out at €140 for 28 shandies, which is extreme.

We will not be able to come back to Cyprus again based on these year’s prices.
