Man arrested in attempted murder case

A 25-YEAR-OLD man from Bangladesh has been remanded after admitting that he stabbed his 33-year-old ex-girlfriend in her Limassol flat, police said yesterday.

“Following a tip-off, Limassol police officers placed the suspect under surveillance, arrested him and lead him to headquarters where under questioning, he admitted that he had stabbed the woman,” said Andreas Angelides, Limassol Police spokesman.

The 25-year-old’s arrest was reportedly made possible after the 33-year-old victim’s condition improved, making it possible for her to give a description of her attacker.

The incident took place last Thursday evening when the 25-year-old had visited the Vietnamese woman’s flat, reportedly seeking reconciliation.

The victim reportedly refused and the alleged assailant took a knife from her kitchen and stabbed her, wounding her in the throat and stomach.

Meanwhile, police said yesterday that the suspect had been residing in Cyprus illegally as he had previously submitted an application for asylum, giving a false name and information.

The suspect appeared before Limassol District Court yesterday, where an eight-day remand was issued.
