Call to boycott milk and bread

THE CYPRUS Consumers’ Union has called on the public to boycott the purchase of milk and bread this Saturday to protest the basic items’ inordinately high prices.

According to a press release, the aim of the 24-hour moratorium is to force down the price of milk and bread through civil action.

President of the Cyprus Consumer’s Union Loucas Aristodemou said that the prices are decreasing everywhere in the EU but in Cyprus remain the same. He added that the deadline given to drop prices has passed and consumers are still waiting.

However, President of the Cyprus Consumers’ Association Petros Markou was sceptical about the endeavour.

“The association wants to examine all measures and also wait for the Competition and Protection Committee’s decision before we call a boycott,” he said.

“The purpose of the boycott is to make the authorities understand that they must decrease the cost of basic items goods – we hope that the public will respond on July 11,” said Aristodemou.
