A little bit of Greek is the key to many doors

With reference to the letter of Ms Hoyle (Which version of Greek? Sunday Mail, June 28). The answer is simple, learn Greek and the Cypriot will follow, or at least your comprehension of it will.

Learn to speak Greek and all doors will be opened for you – much wider than they are now while you wonder which one to learn. Learn to speak Greek in the plural to shopkeepers and people you don’t know and the world will be your oyster.

Cypriots understand Greek just fine and will be impressed by whatever effort you make. You may also enjoy learning about the richness of both languages which can keep you very busy indeed.

As for the problem of signage, the signs are written in Greek not Cypriot. As for your comparison with Dubai, which version of Arabic did you learn while you were there? Different language, same problem multiplied by the number of Arabic speaking countries.
