MPs have no legal power to ban the Mosquito

Re: Deputies call for ban on ‘youth deterring device’ (Cyprus Mail, July 1)

I read with interest your story mentioned above.

As the manufacturers of the Mosquito, I feel I should point out that a call for a ban on the Mosquito has already been made to the EU commission.

In a vote by all MEPs, only 9% voted to ban the device. A 51% majority was needed in order for a ban to proceed.

Because of this outcome, no EU state has the right or power to ban the importation, distribution or use of the Mosquito. The only exception being that a government can enforce a ban on the use of the device on ‘government owned property’.

I trust this clarifies the situation.
