According to your paper last week, the cost of wheat had decreased and subsequently the cost of bread would drop.

True to Cypriot traditions, I visited Constanides Bakery in Peyia on June 20 and purchased a large sliced loaf and guess what? It had gone up by 20 cents.

Further case of H1N1

CYPRUS RECORDED its fifth case of the H1N1 virus yesterday, the last four being young English tourists who recently arrived on the island.

The latest person to have the virus is a 22-year-old English tourist who arrived in Cyprus on June 18.

‘This trial can’t go on forever’

A NICOSIA district judge was yesterday furious when she was again forced to postpone a hearing for a case that has been ongoing since 2008.

Judge Olga Loizou made it clear that the only reason she had agreed to adjourn the trial till next week was out of respect for the Supreme Court and Assize Court.

TRAFFIC cameras won’t return to Cyprus roads until 2010 – but when they do, they will be placed at different spots based on the recommendations of Traffic Police.

A total of 460 cameras are expected to start running in three stages and will be strategically placed in traffic accident hotspots in a bid to increase road safety on the island.

Drugs case adjourned

THREE Nigerian men caught with six kilos of cannabis last week were yesterday in court for their referral to the Assize Court.

The hearing was adjourned until Thursday after the trio requested legal representation.

They face charges of importation, possession with intent to supply and conspiracy to commit a felony.

One year for under a gram of heroin

A 36-YEAR-OLD heroin addict was devastated yesterday when he was jailed for 12 months after being caught with less than a gram of the A-class narcotic.

Speaking from his holding cell minutes before he was taken away to Nicosia’s Central Prisons the man said he couldn’t get over the injustice of his sentence.

“It wasn’t even half a gram. It was 0.165 grams,” he said.
