Littered dam was something to write home about

Below is the gist of an e-mail I sent my wife. She doesn’t live here yet as she still has not retired.

“I took today off to fish the Evretou dam just a few miles from Polis. It’s a dam I’ve wanted to fish for some time but I have to say now after going, it wasn’t worth it.

It wasn’t the distance, or the lack of fishable bank, just like the other dams, or the south end of the dam unreachable because of the access track being severely washed away and not repaired, or the fact that last year only four out of 26 dams were closed for fishing and this year 10 are closed.

It was the garbage and the litter, mindlessly thrown down on the bank side where so-called anglers had been. It would have put a Mexican roadside ditch to shame. I didn’t say too much about it but Kouris dam was much the same and there have been complaints in the press about the trashing of the dam banks by anglers in the past.

Calling it an eyesore, shameful and disgraceful doesn’t even begin to cover it. It was so bad I took photos. I could have cried at the sheer thoughtlessness of it.”
