Where comfort meets tradition

A renovated group of houses provide a perfect retreat in the scenic village of Lofou. ANNA HASSAPI makes herself at home

Located on the edge of picturesque Lofou village, Apokryfo traditional guesthouse is a welcome retreat from the noise of town, combining the comforts of contemporary life with the character and atmosphere of the traditional Cypriot countryside. It is a one of a kind venue, perfect for experiencing the beauty and rustic charm of the Cypriot village, while relaxing and melting away stress at a state-of-the-art retreat.

Apokryfo is a gem in terms of traditional architecture and interiors. It comprises a cluster of traditional houses, previously abandoned and now skillfully renovated by local architect Vakis Hadjikyriakou and his interior designer wife Diana. Working as a team, the couple revived the character and beauty of the traditional buildings, showcasing their innate elegance and the mastery of traditional Cypriot building skills. Only one of the buildings is new, but has been constructed with such care in adopting traditional styles that it looks just like the rest.

The guesthouses can accommodate 28 adults, plus children and are ideal for a group of friends or families, although double rooms for couples are also available. The rooms offer all amenities expected from top of the range hotel rooms, including satellite TV, DVD/CD player and WiFi internet connection, king size beds, central heating and air-conditioning. Some of the rooms have fireplaces, Jacuzzi and even private courtyards.
The rooms at Apokryfo, however, offer much more than any five-star could as they are spaces of unique charm, tasteful design and a traditional ambience. Each room differs from the next, while spaces look as if they came out of an interior design magazine, but maintain a homely, village farmhouse atmosphere. “It feels as if you are going into someone’s private house,” said Diana Hadjikyriakou, who also owns Apokryfo with her husband.

The Cypriot countryside experience is closely associated with its culinary delights and Agrino restaurant at Apokryfo is an excellent choice for trying authentic local flavours. The restaurant offers a set menu of traditional Cypriot dishes with a twist that change daily according to seasonality. The hands-on chef is happy to accept requests and can adjust the menu for a group of vegetarians. Apokryfo’s housekeeper also contributes, making home-made koupepia and marmalades. “All our food is made from local products cultivated in the vicinity of Lofou. You will not find pineapple or kiwi fruit on the menu because we strive to offer seasonal, locally-produced food,” explained Diane.

In the summer months, guests can dine at the rooftop terrace that offers spectacular views of the village, or in the courtyard by the swimming pool. In the evening, movies are aired on the outdoor projector, adding to the charming ambience, while a jazz group will also perform outside during the summer.

Being the haven of serenity that it is Apokryfo could not but include a spa, which features two treatment rooms, sauna, steam bath and a small gym. Spa treatments are available for both men and women and range from Ayurvedic Massage with Warm Aromatic Pillows, Reflexology and Aromatherapy. The Spa at Apokryfo also offers the CST Massage, which is a light, non-invasive touch where the therapist identifies and releases imbalances within the cranio and associated systems. The patient reaches a state of deep relaxation through the palpation of CS fluid, therapeutic pulsing, cranio manipulative techniques and redirection of energy. The spa requires 24-hour notice for all treatments.

Although Apokryfo is so precious that it is understandable if guests don’t want to leave the place, there is lots to do in the surrounding area for those who love to explore the countryside. Guests are provided with a walking map of the surrounds with directions to village sites and a nearby nature trail. They can take the car in any direction and in ten minutes will hit a local winery, or take advantage of the in-house cookery lessons and wine-tasting events.

Prices start from €180 for a couple including breakfast. www.apokryfo.com
