The tendencies of the DIKO volcano

ALL’S WELL that ends well. Even though at the start of the week DIKO was, “a volcano divided into two tendencies” (Sim, Monday) in the wake of the Euro-elections, after Wednesday’s “all-night thriller,” (Phil, Thursday), “unity was up in the air” (Pol, Friday) again by the weekend.

Keep your body in pole position

OKAY, pole-dancing may well be associated with a somewhat seedier tradition than your average fitness craze, but then many dances out there – think samba and tango – do look like endless variations on the theme of mating.

Soutsou in our minds

THE ROAD sign for the capital’s most infamous street, Soutsou, has gone missing. It’s been pulled down many a time by drunken youths crawling out of nearby bars and clubs but this is the first time someone’s actually taken home the street name synonymous with “the oldest profession in the world”.

Gift of life from Limassol family

THE FAMILY of a 54-year-old Limassol district farmer who was pronounced clinically dead on Thursday, have given their consent to donate his vital organs.

According to news reports the Ayios Pavlos villager’s liver and kidneys went to compatible recipients in Thessaloniki, Greece and Cyprus.

Why should we pay for the EAC’s mistakes

I have just read that the price of electricity is to rise because EAC have got it ever so slightly wrong on carbon emissions, and got fined by the EU.

I would like to bring something of a more cheerful nature to light for readers – something good and useful that has happened right here in Limassol.

A small, green point on recycling in Paphos

Your article “Recycling comes to Paphos” (Cyprus Mail, June 2), erroneously states that “the collection of recyclable materials started in Paphos district” in June.

Two states are better than Swiss model

In reference to “The way to a solution” (Letters, May 31, 2009), Hans-Jacob Heitz favours a Swiss federalism solution to the divided island.

I am not sure this can work in Cyprus due to the historical animosity and mistrust of both peoples which goes back to 1571 when the Turks first arrived on the island.

A bit of consistency would help us all save water

We all understand the water problems facing Cyprus and the need for economy measures. However, I am sure that everyone would feel much happier and would find it much easier to plan their water use if the authorities would do two things:

– Turn the water on and off at regular intervals.

– Publish the times so that we all know when the water is coming on and going off.
