Pensioners to benefit from new €90m handout

THE STATE yesterday handed out another €90 million, this time in benefits for pensioners in the form of a one-off Easter bonus across the board and pension increases for those below the poverty line.

Water every Sunday for Nicosia

DOMESTIC water cuts will be reduced by 15 per cent, while farmers and animal grazers will be given 20 million cubic metres, the cabinet decided yesterday.

The 15 per cent reduction represents a 15 per cent increase in the amount of water which the Water Development Board sends to local authorities and district water councils.

Extra passport control staff to smooth the path for Russian tourists

THE GOVERNMENT yesterday dismissed the notion that plans to relax and speed up visa procedures for Russian nationals would put Cyprus in hot water with the European Union’s border controls policy.

“This has nothing to do with the Schengen Treaty…we shall continue to conform to all EU travel regulations regardless,” government spokesman Stefanos Stefanou told the Mail.

Paphos seafront fate decided

A COMPROMISE solution regarding the fate of Poseidonos Avenue in Paphos was taken late on Monday.

Paphos councillor Polis Polydorou confirmed that the newly upgraded seafront road would be open to traffic throughout the year, with specified restrictions in place between the months of June to September.

Three men assaulted on Larnaca street

THREE men from Romania are in hospital after being attacked by seven Indian men in a street near the St Lazarus Church in Larnaca.

The incident took place at 9.30pm on Monday when the three Romanians walking along Adonidos Street were attacked by the gang.

Task force 2012 chief named

CABINET Secretary, Andreas Moleskis, was yesterday appointed head of the task force which will oversee the country’s preparations for taking over the EU Presidency in the second half of 2012.

Government spokesman Stefanos Stefanou announced the decision yesterday, noting that Moleskis would resign from the civil service to take over the EU Presidency 2012 team.

Young friends of the earth embassy plea

REPRESENTATIVES of Young Friends of the Earth Cyprus yesterday visited the embassies of China, Australia and the USA in Nicosia to present letters urging these countries to take positive action on climate change.
