Romanian kills ex-girlfriend’s brother

A 37-YEAR-OLD Romanian man has been remanded in connection with the murder of a 24-year-old man and the wounding of two women in Limassol over the weekend.

The suspect, Daniel Obresku, allegedly attacked his victims in their home. He turned himself in after a protracted police search and in response to the pleading of his friends.

The violent incident took place on Saturday evening when Obresku went to the family home of his ex-girlfriend, Elena Marianna Roiban, on Oedipus street in the Limassol suburb of Ayios Ioannis.

The two are estranged and have a four-year-old child, despite Obresku’s efforts to get back together. On the night of the murder, 22-year-old Roiban had agreed to speak to the suspect at her house.

The discussion degenerated into an argument and Roiban’s brother and mother intervened. At that point, 37-year-old Obresku allegedly pulled out a knife and according to reports started attacking Roiban’s brother, 24-year-old George Brakariou, as well as Roiban and her 40-year-old mother. The trio tried to defend themselves using a penknife, wounding their attacker in the process.

Obresku then fled the house, leaving his victims with serious injuries. Brakariou sustained heavy wounds to the chest and stomach, Roiban sustained wounds to her face, while their 40-year-old mother was stabbed in her ribs.

George Brakariou died on the way to Limassol Hospital, while Elena Roiban underwent surgery.

Police at the scene found the culprit’s weapon approximately 300m from the crime scene. The penknife used by the family was also retrieved at the entrance of the house. A manhunt ensued to locate Obresku, who remained missing until Sunday evening.

According to police information, the suspect was in continuous telephone contact with friends, who tried to convince him to turn himself in, hiding the fact that Brakariou had died.

Finally on Sunday at 8.30pm, Obresku turned himself in to police and allegedly admitted to the charges brought against him.

The suspect appeared before Limassol Court yesterday, where an eight-day remand was issued.
