Wooden pier at ancient Amathunda Port to be extended

AYIOS Tychonas Community Council yesterday announced that plans for an extension of the wooden pier at ancient Amathunda Port is in its final stages.

The current wooden pier which acts as a walkway along the ancient remains in the area will be extended so that pedestrians can walk around the ancient port on the coast.

“There will be an extension to the current seafront walkway which ends with a wooden pier at the Amathunda area. The pier will be constructed exactly opposite the ancient port and a pedestrian walking in the area will be able to walk around the site,” explained Pambos Ioannou, Ayios Tychonas Community Council President.

The local authority has just finished its review of a study by Metsoveion University in Greece on the project’s construction. Ayios Tychonas council added its own suggestions to the study and the completed proposal on the project is expected to be finalised over the next ten weeks. The proposal will then be sent to the Ministry of Communications and Works so that the bidding process for the project’s contractors can begin.

The Limassol seafront walkway that starts from the tourist area and ends at Ayia Varvara church in Amathunda is already popular among locals and tourists. The extension of the wooden pier is expected to cost approximately €5 million, while construction work is scheduled to start by the end of the year.
