Turkey must face consequences of its actions

TURKEY can suffer the consequences of not complying with its obligations towards the EU and Cyprus if there is a unanimous decision by the European Council or if one or more member states prevent the country’s negotiating process for EU accession, Foreign Minister Marcos Kyprianou said yesterday.

Fewer voter registrations for euroelections

THE NUMBER of new voter registrations in view of the upcoming European parliament elections is dramatically smaller than initially expected. According to Interior Ministry, only 5,000 new voters of a total of 12,000 newly-eligible voters have registered.

Farmers get €43 million for foot and mouth

THE COUNCIL of Ministers yesterday approved a €43 million package for dealing with the foot and mouth disease that has affected Cypriot farming.

The majority of the funding will be given to compensate animal grazers for their loss as a result of the disease’s outbreak last year.

Municipalities meet

THE municipality of Engomi in the Nicosia district is hosting representatives from three Greek municipalities as part of efforts to address its social issues.

The municipality is hosting representatives from its twinned municipalities Chania, Ithaki and Ptolemaida between March 29 and April 2.

House to wait and see on English School

THE HOUSE Education Committee yesterday postponed a visit to the English School in light of ongoing tensions between parents and teachers.

Committee Chairman Nikos Tornaritis said the meeting, which had been scheduled for yesterday, had been called off to give parents and the school time to sort out their differences.

Consumer to pay EAC carbon penalties

OVER THE next fortnight, the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) will most likely hike its electricity rates by about three per cent to pay carbon emissions “penalties.”

CY 24-hour service

CYPRUS Airways’ (CY) Larnaca Airport office will start operating from today on a 24-hour basis, the airline’s spokesman Kyriacos Kyriacou said yesterday.

Kyriacou had been invited to the House Commerce Committee to explain CY’s reasons for closing down its customer service office in Larnaca.

Palaiometocho protests new petrol station

THE GREEN Party and the residents of Palaiometocho will be staging a demonstration today, against the planned construction of a petrol station in the area. The Greens blasted the petrol company’s move to request tender offers, despite an ongoing investigation by the Ministry of Health on the health impacts for local residents.
