Annual anti-cancer fundraising campaign in April

THE 34th annual Christodoula march of the Anti-Cancer Society kicks off in April across Cyprus to raise money for the charity.

The national fundraising campaign will take place on April 9, with a total of 54 kiosks set up at key spots of all cities and big communities, which will remain open until 7pm

Donations can also be made at offices, public places, banks, factories, hotels, schools and door-to-door collections from March 30 to April 11, 2009.

On April 11, all big supermarkets will be collecting funds for the charity and on April 12 at the points where the march will begin at all districts.

The Christodoula March is an established charity event in Cyprus, in memory of Christodoula, a woman who died of cancer. The march has been taking place every April for the past 34 years, and it has become a symbol of fighting for all cancer patients and for everyone who knows somebody suffering from cancer.

All funds raised are used by the Cyprus Anti-Cancer Society for cancer patients’ welfare programmes and medical treatment.

In Nicosia the march will begin at 10.30am from the Arodafnousa Hospice. House President Marios Garoyian will lead the march along with Health Minister Christos Patsalides and other invited guests.

There will be two separate marches in Limassol. The first will begin at the early hour of 7am at the Municipal Gardens. Communications Minister Nicos Nicolaides will head the walk with deputies, the mayor and other town officials. The second march will take place on a separate day – May 2 at 9.30am at the police station of the British Bases.

The march in Larnaca will begin at 11 am outside the old Municipality. The walkers will be led by the Commerce Minister Antonis Paschalides along with the Bishop, deputies, the mayor and others.

In Paphos people will gather outside the Municipal Square 11 am. They will be led by the Agriculture Minister Michalis Polynikis, the Bishop of Paphos, deputies, the Geroskipou mayor, the Peyia mayor and others.

In Famagusta the march will begin at 11am and people will set off from the Dheryneia Town Hall. Labour Minister Soteroulla Charalambous will lead the march.

In Polis Chrysochous people will march at 11am and meet outside the Apostolos Andreas Church led by the mayor.
