Recycling only produces more waste here

In his letter Robert Brew last week believes we will still be the Champion Rubbish Nation for years.

I thought we were turning for the better when recycling became the watchword. We started off with a pilot scheme, complete with sensible-sized skips and it seemed to bode well for the future.

I didn’t bargain for the fact that when the scheme proper was introduced we would chose mini-skips, that were full before the end of the day of delivery. Consequently on subsequent days the recycled stuff is dumped in the near and general area of the skips that become sites for large piles of rubbish and remain such until the next skip delivery, and so on and so forth. To make matters worse, bottles are often not even put in the bottle banks but are likewise strewn around in the general area for someone else to deal with..

So fear not Mr Brew, we are still in the gold medal position – but who cares?
