Cops, lies and video tapes

SO THE COPS, allegedly caught on video giving a good kicking to a couple of youths in December 2005, were innocent according to our criminal court? The video was not valid evidence, decided the learned judges in their decision, acquitting the 10 cops who were charged with assaulting the two students.

Who will pay for golf courses’ impact?

I refer to the article by Antonis Loizou published in the Sunday Mail Property&Home section of March 15, 2009 (‘Putting golf on the right course’). I agree with you, golf courses and associated businesses (properties, hotels, etc.) make a lot of sense for a country like Cyprus that is aiming for quality tourism.

More actions are needed for the protection of children’s rights

As a regular visitor of the Coffeeshop, I was gratified to read in last Sunday’s issue Patroclos’ totally justified concerns about the recent Supreme Court decision by which a man who had been at first instance sentenced to nine years imprisonment for sexually abusing his 11-year-old son was acquitted for reasons that do not take into account children’s rights.

What’s the rush? Cyprus is great

Oh no – not another letter from a whingeing Brit!.  I thought it was time to redress the balance a little.  My husband and I have lived in Cyprus for six years, since retiring.  Had we stayed in Britain, we would not have been able to afford to retire.

Best of luck in England, B. Jones

Are we to believe that the reasons highlighted in B. Jones’ bitter and somewhat spiteful letter which are allegedly causing them to leave Cyprus, are ones which have just developed? Are they instances which have only recently become part of the way of life on the island?

Boring? No, but England has many other drawbacks

Dear B. Jones,

You, like thousands of others, obviously didn’t do your homework and research properly before you moved to Cyprus. Of course having a holiday somewhere will be totally different to living in the country. If you knew of the limited public transport system. why move to that country if you can’t drive and can’t get around and explore the wonders of the island?

Doesn’t anyone think of the trees?

I learnt recently that major supermarkets in other countries are installing check-out tills that will print on both sides of the receipt thus, in one stroke, cutting the amount of paper used in half and making a significant saving in felled trees, transport costs and – of course – money.

Recycling only produces more waste here

In his letter Robert Brew last week believes we will still be the Champion Rubbish Nation for years.

I thought we were turning for the better when recycling became the watchword. We started off with a pilot scheme, complete with sensible-sized skips and it seemed to bode well for the future.
