Novelty campaign to lure voters for euro polls

CYPRUS has chosen four visuals to boost interest in the euro elections, the campaign logo for which is: ‘It’s your choice!’

Many Europeans, and Cypriots are no exception, feel the euro elections are far removed from them but head of the European Parliament Office in Cyprus, Tasos Georgiou said: “The issues at stake in the European elections are highly relevant to the everyday life of citizens”

“The campaign focuses on topics that affect everyday lives to underline the significance of the European elections,” he added.

The slogan ‘It’s your choice!’ was devised to encourage voters to think about the choices that have to be made on issues that affect their everyday lives, such as energy, family life and consumer rights, financial market, traffic, security, science, education, consumer protection, migration and antidiscrimination and standardisation, among others, Georgiou said.

The hot topics for Cyprus, he said, are borders and migration, budget, energy and standardisation. Georgiou said that for the campaign, 3D street installations depicting these issues would be used. They are designed to provoke a public debate on the four topics.

The 3D installations will be four metres long and eight metres high and will be installed close to Nicosia main roundabout, and in a parking place in the centre of Limassol,” he said.

Georgiou said the campaign would be carried out in the 27 member states in 23 official languages for the election of the 736 MEPs by 375 million eligible EU voters. Some 36 million Europeans are first-time voters.

Other media methods would also be used such as billboards, television and Radio ads, election website and social media and a Choice Box

Georgiou said this was a large, room-sized, multi-media box, in which voters could express their views and make choices on different topics. The Choice Box will be placed on Ledra Street in Nicosia, by the end of April.

The Euro election campaign will have entries on Facebook and MySpace, and show campaign material and pictures on Flickr. EU Tube will also carry a special European Parliament channel.

The unofficial EU target is to bring at least 50 per cent of the voters to the polls for the elections on June 6. “In Cyprus the target is to bring more than 80 per cent, and if we achieve that, it will be a great success”, Georgiou said.
