PAPHOS mayor Savvas Vergas was yesterday shot down by the government, after he insisted that his municipality wants to manage its water supplies without outside interference.

Following the recent spell of solid rainfall, from which dams in Paphos have benefited the most, the local municipality plans to ease water cuts.

Officer: no orders were given to shoot Solomou

A RETIRED Turkish Cypriot army officer and former politician yesterday broke his silence to hit back at accusations that he gave the order to shoot and kill Solomos Solomou as he tried to pull down a ‘TRNC’ flag at the Dherynia crossing in 1996.

Solomou was shot and killed during the worst and only outbreak of intercommunal violence since the Turkish invasion in 1974.

Murder suspect had a history of mental illness

THE SUSPECT at the centre of a grizzly murder case had a history of mental problems. The claim was made by a neighbour, as a Nicosia District Court yesterday remanded Renos Chrysanthou for eight days. Chrysanthou has admitted to killing his brother-in-law in Paleometocho.

Police are now investigating a case of premeditated murder.
