Opposition DISY candidates sign up for Euro elections

FIVE members of the right-wing party DISY yesterday submitted their candidacy for the June 6 European Parliament elections.

The five candidacies are: Ioannis Kasoulides, Christos Stylianides, Eleni Theocharous, Timis Efthymiou and Christoforos Fokaides.

The sixth candidate DISY will be appointed by the party President Nicos Anastassiades. According to DISY Director General Panayiotis Antoniou, Anastassiades has the ability to appoint a person of his choice to complete the DISY ballot of the European Parliament. All candidacies will be ratified during a meeting of the party’s Supreme Council on March 14.

DISY which is a member of the European People’s Party, is currently represented at the European Parliament by two MEPs: Ioannis Kasoulides and Panayiotis Demetriou.

MEP Panayiotis Demetriou did not submit his candidacy to re-claim office .According to a source Demetriou appeared highly dissatisfied with the situation created by the candidates and therefore did not submit his candidacy.

Cyprus will participate for the second time in the EP elections. The first time was in June 2004, only one month after Cyprus’ accession to the EU.

Cyprus is represented at the EP by six MEPs.
