Time to submit candidacy for AKEL election

AKEL members vying for the party leadership were yesterday allowed to start submitting their candidacy.

Interested parties have to submit their candidacy to AKEL general-secretary Demetris Christofias directly.

At present there are two known contenders for the top job: AKEL deputy Nicos Katousrides and AKEL spokesman Andros Kyprianou. It is thought neither one will submit his candidacy before tomorrow’s election.

The Central Committee is due to convene at 4pm to take its vote. The names of prospective contenders will not be announced before then.

All 105 members of the Central Committee have the right to submit their candidacy up until tomorrow afternoon’s session begins.
