Brothers in blue through thick and thin

Tales from the coffeeshop

GIVEN our love of conspiracy theories, I am surprised that I have still not read a report on the front page of our leading daily Phil about the plot by the island’s drug barons – in co-operation with the British secret services – to discredit Ykan (drug squad) which had dealt serious blows to the narcotics trade in the last year.

Our man in Washington

FOR most, attending the inauguration of a US president is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, not to mention the kudos of securing a much-coveted ticket to one of the official inaugural balls.

Andreas Jacovides, 72, and his wife, Pamela, attended three.

University professor accused of plagiarism

A University of Cyprus assistant professor is facing charges of plagiarism, in a case that has shocked many within the university’s faculty.

The allegations concern an academic from the Department of Classics and Philosophy, who is suspected of stealing from the work of Alasdair MacIntyre, a well-known philosopher for his contribution to moral and political philosophy.

Remand extended for top cop

AVRAAM Charalambous, the Drug Law Enforcement Unit’s second-in-command, was yesterday remanded in custody for eight days in connection with the escape of a convicted murderer and rapist from a private hospital last month.

Kudos to the Paphos traffic police

Sir,
I feel that congratulations to the Chief of Paphos Traffic Police is in order. The year-on-year downward trend in road deaths reflects the hard work that is going into getting into the hearts and minds of drivers.

This, together with ongoing improvements to the infrastructure, is the only way that the rate of accidents can be brought down and sustained at lower levels.

The last thing Israel wants is to occupy Gaza

Sir,

If the Israeli occupation were half as brutal as the Palestinians allege, they surely would have done everything in their power to ensure that Israel did not reoccupy Gaza after leaving it unilaterally.

Taking up the offer of Napa in winter

Sir,

I feel compelled to comment on the wonderfully thought and written article by Nathan Morley,
“The joys of an Ayia Napa winter” (Sunday Mail, December 28).

Police’s job is not to play music

Sir,
On behalf of ‘Al Capone’ and associates, I would also like to say a big thank you to the police band for their Xmas playing of yuletide songs – Bravo!
One small question: why not leave that sort of thing to the Salvation Army or suchlike? Your job is to police.

It’s not Cyprus’ fault the pound collapsed

Sir,
C’mon George from Paphos, what are you talking about? Yes, prices are dearer here than the UK but then they were before the euro came in – its not Cyprus’ fault the pound has collapsed and if you work out the prices you quoted in your letter back into Cyprus pounds, they don’t seem all that dearer.

Cyprus needs to wake up to rising prices

Sir,

I read with interest the letter from Brian Green, of Ross-on-Wye about the high cost of food.
Having just spent three weeks in Paphos I must agree with him, although the fact that the pound sterling now equates to the euro is not the fault of Cyprus, but of Great Britain.
