Two in remand for assaulting man and abandoning him in street

TWO ROMANIAN men, a 33-year-old and a 17-year-old are in remand for assaulting a 48-year-old compatriot of theirs, and abandoning him in the middle of a busy street, where he was hit by an oncoming vehicle.

The victim is in a critical condition at Limassol General Hospital.

The incident took place in the early hours of Sunday outside a tavern in Ypsonas village at Elias Kannaouros street. On Saturday night the 48-year-old victim and a group of friends went to the tavern, where the two suspects were also present. At some point the two suspects and the 48-year-old got involved in an argument.

The two men dragged the 48-year-old outside and started kicking and punching him. When the two assailants saw a car coming, they ran off, leaving their unconscious victim in the middle of the street. As it was dark, the car’s driver did not notice the man lying in the street and run him over.

The 48-year-old was taken to hospital, where it was confirmed he sustained fractures to the legs, spine and neck, as well as internal bleeding in the stomach. He was placed on life-support machine at the intensive care unit of Limassol General Hospital.

The driver who ran over the 48-year-old was subjected to an breathalyser test, which indicated that he had a zero alcohol level. He told police that he did not see the victim until it was too late.

Following eyewitness reports, police identified the two assailants who were arrested on Sunday. The 33-year-old and the 17-year-old appeared before Limassol Court yesterday, charged with causing grievous bodily harm, intending to cause grievous bodily harm and causing a traffic accident. An eight-day remand was issued.
