Two in remand for assaulting man and abandoning him in street

TWO ROMANIAN men, a 33-year-old and a 17-year-old are in remand for assaulting a 48-year-old compatriot of theirs, and abandoning him in the middle of a busy street, where he was hit by an oncoming vehicle.

The victim is in a critical condition at Limassol General Hospital.

Credit card spending on the rise in 2008

LOCAL credit card spending increased 16 per cent to €1.9 billion in 2008 but tourist credit-card spending fell 3.0 per cent to €491 million, clearing agency JCC statistics showed yesterday.

Escaped convict nabbed in Paphos

AN ESCAPED convict, was overpowered and arrested in a Paphos kebab house as he attempted a shoot-out with police officers on Sunday.

Razia Demlos, 22, had escaped from custody on January 6 while visiting his sick mother at her home, where he managed to give the police officers guarding him the slip. He escaped through the toilet window and has been on the run ever since.

Committee approved to oversee desalination plans

THE COUNCIL of Minister approved the establishment of a committee to oversee the construction of desalination units in Cyprus, following the proposal of the Minister of Agriculture Michalis Polynikis.

The committee, comprising several state departments, will act as a guarantee for the transparency of all work related to these projects.

Animal charity appeals for blankets and sheets Founder sees a drop in posionings

PAFIAKOS and CCP animal welfare charity based in Paphos have put out an urgent call for blankets, sheets and towels.

Christine Panayiotou, who founded the organisation in 1980, told the Cyprus Mail, “We desperately need them; it doesn’t matter if they’re old and have holes. We use them for bedding, to cover the cages at nighttimes and in our rescues.”
