Mirror, mirror on the wall…

WE WOULD like to convey to all our regulars, rather belatedly, our best wishes for a happy, productive, exciting, intellectually stimulating, sexually active year full of love and joy. You may have noticed that we diplomatically omitted the stock adjective ‘prosperous’ in case some readers thought we were having a laugh at their expense.

What do early elections mean for the north?

FACED WITH mounting criticism over falling living standards and a lack of progress on a solution to the Cyprus problem and EU membership, the Turkish Cypriot ‘government’ called a snap general election on Monday, prompting fears that a change in leadership in the north could further hamper efforts to reunite the island.

A mellow man, until you mention Margaret Thatcher

FOR a brief period in the 1980s Derek Hatton was arguably the most famous left-wing politician in Britain, best remembered as a firebrand socialist when he was deputy leader of Liverpool City Council in 1985.

Cities of the future

ANYONE WHO’S been to the archaeological site at Kalavasos-Tenta will know that a group of people gave up their nomadic lifestyle to settle there some 9,000 years ago.

They didn’t know it at the time, but this community of pioneers developed an original civilisation called the Cypriote Aceramic Neolithic.

Downer: no artificial deadlines in Cyprus talks

FINDING A resolution to the Cyprus problem by the end of 2009 will depend on the stance held by Turkey and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, President Demetris Christofias said on Friday.

Daylight robbery certainly doesn’t encourage tourism

Sir,
I have read much in your paper recently about the dwindling number of tourists visiting your beautiful island and many reasons have been put forward as to why this is happening.

Eurocypria scrambles for loans

Sir,
I was intrigued to see the above headline in the Cyprus Mail (January 1, 2009). I smiled to myself at how the mighty have almost fallen.

I am a citizen of the Irish Republic who visits Cyprus four times a year. Eurocypria fly from Dublin to Larnaca but do you think I can go online and book myself a return flight? Not on your Nelly.

Winter heating allowance is a fiasco

Sir,
As happens every year, heated altercations are breaking out in our village square and tavernas on this vexed subject.

Who is eligible? Who is not? Why are there several lists doing the rounds? Many thought the allowance had something to do with winter or heating or both. The truth is not a bit of it.

Cost of living is getting out of hand

Sir,
What is going on out here? The prices are just rising all the time and if it carries on like this, I feel most British expats will be returning to the UK as they cannot afford to live out here.
Can I please point out that today we purchased six items of groceries from E&S.  The cost of these items came to €56.94.

Does anyone really want reunification?

Sir,
I am glad that Chris Christofi (Do Turkish Cypriots need a lawyer? Sunday Mail, January 4) has responded to my theoretical “marriage by force” concept. I am also glad that he came up with some kind of a “union” concept; although, with all due respect to Chris, I found your presentation somewhat incoherent.
