Court hears of accomplice’s role in Kitas escape

TWENTY-two-year-old Rodosthenis Christodolou was yesterday remanded in custody for eight days in connection with aiding and abetting escaped convict Antonis Prokopiou Kitas, alias Al Capone.

The Nicosia district court heard that Christodoulou had allegedly helped Kitas escape from the Appollonion private hospital on December 12 and that he had been the driver of the getaway car.

Six legionnaires’ babies released from hospital

SIX NEWBORN babies who contracted Legionnaires’ disease were yesterday discharged from the Makarios Hospital.

The infants have been allowed to leave the hospital under instructions to their parents that they return to hospital for a period of time for further tests, Makarios Hospital Paediatric Head Dr Andreas Hadjidemetriou said.

Cyprus only EU member not on Legionella network

CYPRUS is the only member of the European Union that is not a member of the European Working Group for Legionella Infections (EWGLI).

Moreover the island is not a signatory of the European Guidelines for responding to cases of travel associated Legionnaires’ disease in all the participant countries.

But the Health Ministry does not see this as a problem.

France could help in effort to battle outbreak

FRANCE could help Cyprus to battle the current outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease, French President Nicolas Sarkozy said yesterday.

“Yes, certainly, we can help other European countries, such as Cyprus, overcome such health crises and human tragedies,” Sarkozy told the Cyprus Mail during a hospital visit in the eastern city of Strasbourg.

Growth forecast slashed again as credit crunch bites

THE GLOBAL financial crisis has prompted a new revision of the island’s 2009 economic growth rate, down from 3.0 per cent to 2.1 per cent, Finance Minister Charilaos Stavrakis said yesterday.

Stavrakis cited the deteriorating European, UK and Russian economies, the most important partners for Cyprus when it comes to tourism, real estate and financial services.
