Road deaths fall, but target still a long way off

DESPITE a slight decrease in road deaths in 2008 compared to the year before, the state is still a long way off from achieving EU goals to halve road fatalities by 2010.

The increase in fines and stepping up of police campaigns to reduce road accidents didn’t bring the desired results for 2008.

Clerides to be discharged after four weeks in hospital

FORMER President Glafcos Clerides is due out of hospital on Monday after a stay of four weeks, his doctor said yesterday.

Clerides, who will be 90 in April, had an operation for a fractured left hip on December 9. Doctors say he has made a good recovery and is now ready to be discharged from the Evangelistria Clinic.

More rain expected over weekend

MORE rain is expected over the weekend and on Monday, while low temperatures will also continue over the next three days, according to the Meteorological Service. The relatively high atmospheric pressure is expected to subside, giving way to more rain and snow in the mountains.

New LGR website launched

LONDON Greek Radio (LGR) has launched a new and improved website in a bid to reach out to as many Greek speakers living abroad as possible.

Since its creation in 1983, LGR has become part of the daily life of London’s sizeable Greek speaking community, and the site’s launch is part of an effort to act as a communication tool between Cypriots and Greeks around the world.

Winter sales to start early

WINTER sales are starting on January 7, approximately a month earlier than usually provided by law (first Monday of February).

On the last day of 2008, Commerce Minister, Antonis Paschalides, issued the decree that sets the date of winter discounts on January 7 ending February 21, 2009. The sales regard clothing, footwear, household equipment and furniture.

Interior ministry poised to allow overseas voting

THE Interior Minister is to conclude on a bill amending voting laws by the end of this month, allowing overseas voting for the first time.

Minister Neoklis Silikiotis is expected to submit his proposals to the Cabinet for approval, with the aim having Parliament pass the new legislation before the European Parliament elections take place in June.
