Burst pipe leaking water for four weeks

FOR four weeks a burst water pipe has been left exposed in the middle of a Nicosia road, with local residents complaining that no one has bothered to fix it.

Earlier this month, technicians of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) dug up several ditches on Glafcou Street, off Nikis Avenue, for the purpose of laying power cables.

During the works, the crew inadvertently ruptured an underground water pipe, causing water to leak through to the surface.

Local residents called the EAC, who sent a repair crew, which covered the hole with cement. But it appears this was a patch job, as the cement layer was soon after ruptured by passing cars.

“The ditch is about 15 to 20 cm deep, and every other day there is water flowing to the surface from the ruptured pipe. There’s no telling how much water is being wasted below ground,” said Christophoros Christophoros, a resident of the Ayioi Omoloyites area.

On December 18, Christophorou called the EAC to again report the problem, but since then there has been no response.

Two days ago, Christophorou sent a facsimile to the EAC detailing the problem and urgently asking that it be resolved.

“It is inconceivable that, at a time when they are telling us that every drop counts, so much water is being wasted,” said Christophorou.
