The stories that enriched our lives

When I was told to pick out my favourite story of 2008 I knew I was faced with an extremely difficult task. Making choices is not my forte on a good day, but when you write a whole range of stories, selecting one that stands out is next to impossible.

The day the street opened

For a journalist there’s nothing quite like witnessing and being part of an historical event, and the one that sticks out most in 2008 was the opening of the Ledra Street crossing point. After writing about it for more than two years, it finally happened on April 3.

Building standards in Cyprus

Sir,

My son moved to Cyprus about eight years ago. He bought a newly-built house which looked impressive but after a year or two it had a serious damp problem and a number of alarming cracks.

Another example of institutionalised racism?

Sir,

The Nicosia Mayor says considerations like car parking and noise pollution must be taken into consideration when granting a licence for a Buddhist temple in Nicosia (Buddhists left in limbo, Cyprus Mail, December 23).

Most Orthodox churches on the island have no car parking facilities, and make a lot more noise than a Buddhist temple would.

A precious opportunity to meet Turkish Cypriot friends

Sir,

We would like to share with you our experiences after participating in a memorable bi-communal weekend workshop which was part of the 5th International Children’s Film Festival of Cyprus. The workshop took place at the Fulbright Centre, the Goethe Institute and Ledra Palace at the end of November.

One year on: what we think

“I am now used to the euro, I thought I would struggle to adapt with using a new currency but it was easier than I thought. It tool me a while to get used to the dual pricing and when I was asked how must a shave cost I would say it in pounds and I was a bit slow in giving customers change in euros” Marios Theodorou, 62, Nicosia barber.
