At 8.45pm, a car driven by a 28-year-old ran over 18-year-old Tsurin Sviatoslav, who was crossing the road at the time. The 28-year old driver was arrested and remanded in custody to facilitate investigations. The driver showed a zero alcohol level.

Banana production slashed by half

BANANA production in Cyprus has fallen by at least half in the last season.

The warning came from the secretary general of the banana field owners, Doros Panayiotopoulos, who fears next season’s crop may be even worse.

Free bicycles for Yeroskipou children

ONE HUNDRED pupils in Yeroskipou in Paphos were each given a free bicycle yesterday.

Secondary school students aged between 12 and 13 took possession of their new bicycles as part of a local municipality initiative, which has been running for the last seven years.

Building permits slump

THE number of building permits issued between January and October this year fell 8.4 per cent to 7,291 over the same period in 2007, the Statistics Department said yesterday.

The total value of these permits decreased by 0.1 per cent and the total area affected by 2.4 per cent. ?he number of dwelling units to be built under the permits recorded a decrease of 6.3 per cent.

Cypriot businessman murdered in Papua New Guinea

A NUMBER of arrests have been made in connection with the brutal murder of prominent Cypriot businessman Sir George Constantinou, who lived in Papua New Guinea.

Constantinou was Cyprus’ Honorary Consul at Papua New Guinea. He had moved to PNG from Cyprus in the 1950s and established one of the most successful business and construction empires in the country.
