Boys will race, so why not be safe?

Sir,

Having read Rosie Charalambous’ article on the noise and danger created by these ‘Boy Racers’, I totally agree with her but the problem is not going to stop no matter how tough the police become.

I live at a busy crossroads of Nicosia, right next to a major police station and have to listen to the ear-piercing noise of high performance motor bikes and believe me that’s a whole lot worse than cars!

Why can’t an area be made available somewhere way out of Nicosia for these people to go and race if that’s what they want to do? If they’ve got the racing bug, the threat of the police won’t stop them…

You can try showing them scary videos of crashes and public information films but that won’t work either. Applications have been made over the years for tracks to be built for this purpose and have always been refused.

Other countries in Europe have done it: Malta has at least two tracks and is not even half the size of Cyprus, so why can’t we? Let’s work together to solve this problem and save some lives.

Connie Hughes,

Nicosia
