Waiting to receive the next planeload of Chinese tourists

Sir,
In some desperation, it appears we are now making up the shortfall in tourism by encouraging tourists from India, China, and of course Russia.

The choice of China is hilarious, given that the first load of tourists never caught the return flight, with the passengers seeking asylum in Cyprus. As a result, the Immigration Officers refused to let the second plane disembark.

But the tourist is more important than is realised by the government.  It is the tourists who returns to buy the house; who keeps the developer going and provides work for his labourers; who furnishes his house with goods that keeps the store keeper in business; who buys the food which keeps the supermarket going.

Cut out the tourist and the whole lot collapses. Still, I look forward to my next neighbour from India living next to me, presuming he has the interest in moving to a sunnier climate and has the money to enter the property market…

If not, we might come to regret the way we have failed to issue title deeds which has now firmly close the door to the British.

P. Davis,
Paphos
