It’s plain to see who’s breaking the law

Sir,
Referring to Geoff Cosson’s letter (‘Blots on the landscapes, Letters, November 9), I can confirm that most of the billboards along the main road from Pissouri to Paphos are illegal.
According to the law, billboards require a licence from the local authorities, should be sited 40 metres away from the highway and be placed 1km from each other.

As most of these unsightly hoardings are advertising housing complexes, they demonstrate yet again that developers are both above the law and insensitive to the feelings of others.

It is hard to believe they don’t realise that such environmental degradation deters rather than encourages both holidaymakers and potential house purchasers alike.
Please could the government of Cyprus uphold its own laws.  After all, the signs themselves proclaim who is responsible for this illegal disfigurement of the landscape.

Jocelyne Humphrey,
Pissouri
