It would have been a seminal turning point for the United States even without the phenomenon of Barack Obama. George W Bush hands over a very different America in 2008 to the one he took charge of in 2000.

Christofias calls for patience on talks

PRESIDENT Demetris Christofias yesterday called for patience following his latest meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat.

The leaders are to meet twice next week, on Tuesday and Friday.

Quizzed by reporters when he returned to the Presidential Palace yesterday, Christofias said that when progress was achieved, he would announce it.

22-year-old dies of heroin overdose

A 22-YEAR-old heroin user from Limassol was found dead in the early hours of yesterday, after taking a lethal dose of the illegal drug, police said yesterday.

“The incidents of death from drug use have increased, which worries police,” said Andreas Angelides, Limassol Police Press Officer.

Bank of Cyprus completes Uniastrum Bank acquisition

THE Bank of Cyprus said yesterday it had concluded the acquisition of 80 per cent in Russia’s Uniastrum Bank for $576 million (€447m) as part of its expansion strategy abroad.

The bank said the acquisition was completed after regulatory approval from the central banks of Cyprus and Russia and the Russian Federal Antimonopoly Service.

Airport shuttles damaged in apparent sabotage

FOUR Larnaca airport shuttle buses have been tampered with by alleged competitors, reports said yesterday.

The buses, two of which belong to EAL (Limassol Urban Bus Company) and two to Nicosia’s Kapnos, had their serpentine belts cut in the past few days.

The buses carry out routes to and from Larnaca airport from Limassol and Nicosia respectively.

Authorities insist no risk to public from contaminated feed

DIOXIN contaminated fishmeal mixed into animal feed distributed to farms with chickens and pigs in Larnaca and Limassol poses no danger to public health, according to the Deputy Director of the Veterinary Services, Petros Papasozomenos.
