Let the liberty rationing begin

THE DICTATORSHIP of the proletariat has been spreading its roots in the People’s Republic of Kyproulla. Union bosses are becoming more arrogant than ever before – and this takes some doing – as they are guaranteed our people-friendly government’s unwavering support even when they resort to gangster-type tactics, like the bank employees union ETYK did last week.

Feeling whole again

For years Anastasia Stylianou had learned to live with her partial mastectomy, but then she went to Germany for reconstructive surgery. The operation transformed her life and highlights yet again the need for a specialised breast unit in Cyprus

Health care provision: why go private?

IN VIEW of the delay in introducing a universal public healthcare scheme in Cyprus, Cyprus remains the only EU state that does not offer free healthcare to all its citizens. Due to the strict income criteria for public healthcare eligibility, many Cypriots are ineligible for free care.

When Dave becomes Debbie.

David Hale looks great at 45 – he is tall, snake-hipped, has piercing green eyes and a thick mop of dark auburn hair. You’d never guess he has a quarter-of-a-century-old secret shared only with his closest, most-trusted friends.

Could Oliver Twist help with the credit-crunch?

The President’s advice came as music to the ears of the author of a brand new book on Victorian workhouse food, which is proving to be a surprise hit.

Thank God for the Russians

WITH THE squeeze on at home, Russians are moving their money to European financial institutions, and Cyprus is becoming one of the main beneficiaries.

Russians are becoming increasingly important tourists and property buyers in Cyprus, and they also may well be the main reason the island has yet to feel the pinch from the global credit crunch.

Boating in shallow waters requires due care

Sir,

Few would have failed to notice the bitter irony following the death of a UN soldier who was diving and subsequently run over by a police patrol boat. After all, the police boats are there for the protection of swimmers and to check the legality and safety of boaters alike.

Full fines for smoking in public

Sir,

I was interested to read there is to be an examination of how the smoking ban can be enforced, and the Justice Minister’s suggestion that the fines are too low to be a deterrent.

I must disagree – it doesn’t matter what the punishment is (smokers and non-smokers alike are already aware that smoking carries a possible death sentence) if the law is not enforced.

Big flags aren’t the exclusive domain of Turkey

Sir,

I was interested to read the October 12 letter from Chris Christofi of London referring to the star and crescented flag on the mountains overlooking Nicosia.

Hopefully, the removal of this antagonistic symbol above the home village of President Christofias will one day signal real progress in reunification discussions.
