Europe and the Mediterranean

A HIGH profile two-day conference on ‘The Mediterranean and the new Euro-Mediterranean perspectives’ opens today in Nicosia.

The conference, organised by the Daedalos Institute of Geopolitics in Cyprus’ will be opened by Foreign Minister Marcos Kyprianou with a keynote address by Hesham Youssef, Chief of the Cabinet of the Secretary General of he Arab League of Nations.

Topics include the Union for the Mediterranean, the enlargement of Europe towards the East, Israel and Palestine, and NATO and South East Europe.

Tomorrow’s session includes topics related to economy and energy, and culture, civilisation and history. The keynote speaker on economy and energy will be Mohammed Safadi, the Minister of the Economy and Trade of Lebanon.

Guest speakers from Germany, France, Israel, Italy, Lebanon and Algeria will participate, along with the Cypriot speakers from the University of Cyprus.

The conference will be held at the Holiday Inn in Nicosia at 3pm today, and at 9am tomorrow, and is open to the public. Translation will be provided in English, French and Greek.
