Village fears for the worst as ancient spring dries up

SINCE ancient times, the pride of Farmakas village has been its bubbling spring: Koshinas.

The spring quite literally greened the village, providing villagers with all their domestic water, watering the village’s famous citrus and apricot trees and attracting visitors from far and wide who came to picnic by its banks.

Clean up your mess

Sir,

Which developer will be the first to set an example and clean the rubbish around their finished building sites. Just drive around villages like Peyia, Tala or Mandria and you will see what I mean.

Paphos pricing tourists out of town

Sir,

As a frequent visitor to the island, I was last over in May. I liked the new Paphos harbour area, no cars running along the seafront. My wife and I actually stopped for a meal and drinks, we were shocked at how expensive it was, you would expect to pay more, but not that much more.

A real message for the future

Sir,

Stefanos Evripidou’s article in last Sunday’s edition is a really balanced and intelligent assessment of the need to improve the teaching of history in Cyprus schools.

I hope the Minister will have read it, and been fortified in his intention to move away from the one-sided view of history perpetuated in many textbooks.

Mobile phone drivers

Sir,

According to a statistical analysis from researchers at The George Institute for International Health, drivers who talk on cell phones are four times more likely to have an accident that results in hospitalisation than non-talkers.

Four times. Knock wood.

The study also found that the presence of car passengers increases accident risk.

Ambulances are not a taxi service’

ONE THIRD of calls made for ambulances in Nicosia are for non-urgent requests, which are considered medically unnecessary.

Emergency ambulances, which should only be used in life or death situations are regularly being called out by members of the public for minor ailments, at the expense of the state.
