New phishing scam targets CyTA clients

THE CYPRUS Telecommunications Authority has issued a phishing warning to its customers after several people reported receiving misleading emails.

In a recent message, supposedly signed by ‘CYTANET Web media’, recipients are asked to reply with their access codes in an email for a ‘maintenance procedure, for protection against phishing messages and upgrade of their CYTANET account’.

The deceiving messages are a case phishing, where fraudsters attempt to gather information from internet users such as identity details, credit card numbers, passwords, account information or other personal information, using various false pretexts.

Phishing scams reach the recipients, usually through mass emails or through pop-ups, when visiting some websites.

This kind of fraud is rapidly becoming a global phenomenon and is particularly worrying to international organisations, as well as Interpol.

In its message, CyTA clarified that it has nothing to do with the sender of the messages and urged its customers not to divulge any personal details.

The company reiterated that Cytanet never asks for such information via email and advises its customers whenever they have any doubts or reservations about dubious, to call the CYTANET Customer Services at 8000 8080 for information.
