Two more flights take stranded passengers home

THE BRITISH Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) that runs the ATOL travel protection scheme has been continuing to arrange flights back to the UK for XL passengers stranded in Cyprus.

Yesterday, two aircraft left Larnaca for the UK as part of one of the largest repatriation operations in modern tourism history.

Ayios Nicolaos water withdrawn in health scare

AYIOS NICOLAOS mineral water was yesterday withdrawn from the market as a precaution by the KEO Group, after a virus was detected in a batch of 1.5 litre bottles.

The Health Services of the Ministry of Health said in a statement that they had immediately withdrawn the specific batch, “in a plastic bottle of 1. 5 litres with batch number L14208 and the expiry date 28.08.2009”.

Torture charges dropped against police officers, but serious charges remain

THE NICOSIA Criminal Court yesterday acquitted 10 police officers on charges of torture and grievous bodily harm.

The court then instructed the officers, who are still facing a total of 70 charges between them, to apologise for their part in the December 2005 beating of students Marcos Papageorgiou and Yiannis Nicolaou.

Anti-doping committee resigns

THE HEAD of the Cyprus National Anti-Doping Committee and the members of the committee have announced their resignation following a series of conflicts with the Cyprus Sports Organisation (CSP).

Committee head Dr Evagoras Nicolaides said the resignation was due to the CSP’s counter-productive attitude towards the committee and constant undermining of their anti-doping efforts.

Cattle farmers take protest to the Palace

ROMANIAN airline Blue Air yesterday announced they would be selling plane tickets for as cheap as one euro, as part a new promotional offer.

Blue Air, which is the leader of low-cost Romanian airline transport, has signed a deal with Cypriot travel agency Orthodoxou Aviation, naming it its exclusive representative in Cyprus.
