Authorities urged to install cycle racks in towns

THE Environment Commissioner yesterday sent guidelines to all municipalities across the island, urging them to install a bicycle parking system.

Charalambos Theopemptou explained that the specific system is used all over the world and is “very cheap and easy to install.”

He added that there is nowhere in Cyprus where people can currently safely leave their bicycles.

“Schools have a system in place allowing pupils to lock the front wheel of their bike, but ideally, both wheels as well as the frame should be secured, and this system allows for this,” explained Theopemptou.

According to the US Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals, the lack of a secure parking space keeps many people from using their bikes for basic transportation.

“Leaving a bicycle unattended, even for short periods, can easily result in damage or theft,” they say. “Finding a bike rack that doesn’t work or isn’t conveniently located makes for a frustrating experience.”

The Commissioner himself was on the receiving end of a theft two years ago, when his bicycle was stolen from outside his Larnaca flat.

“I really hope that those responsible will install this system on pavements, with the aim of helping people safely park their bicycles,” he said.

“I believe that the reaction will be a positive one and I urge them to make an announcement during Mobility Week, beginning on September 20, stating their plans to install the system.
