Girl of 13 detained for burglary

PAPHOS police released a young teenage girl detained for burglary at the weekend, when they discovered she was only 13 years old.

The girl had been detained on suspicion of breaking and entering into four houses in the district and stealing clothes, mobile phones and cash, amounting to a value of more than €4,000.

Authorities in Cyprus are powerless to arrest anyone under the age of 14, and the child was released without charge.

The youngster and her mother are both Bulgarian nationals residing in Paphos, where she attends a local school.

Representatives from the welfare department were unavailable for comment.
