Demonstration as Paphos seafront to be opened to one way traffic

THE ONGOING dispute over the new seafront road in Kato Paphos continues as two opposing groups have emerged from the the mêlée.

Work on Poseidonos Avenue will be completed in a few days and has split residents into those in favour of opening the road to traffic, and those who wish it to remain as a pedestrianised zone.

Mayor of Paphos, Savvas Vergas, has come under pressure from both sides, with business owners in the area holding numerous demonstrations. They are calling for the seafront road to be opened to traffic, which they say will help boost falling trade. It would also enable easier deliveries and safety and rubbish vehicles to gain better access to the area.

On the other hand, the opposing group believe the area isn’t safe for both vehicles and pedestrians as there are no curbs to separate the two. They also say the area is an excellent attraction for locals and visitors, who are now able to wander along the seafront to the harbour.

Demonstrations continued yesterday with a protest staged last night by the latter group who are calling for the road to remain as a pedestrianised walkway.

Vergas attended the meeting and listened to their concerns. But pointed out that the municipality has already taken the decision to open the road to one-way traffic, commencing in a few days.

Although, he did say the situation was a trial, and would be closely monitored.
