Car jackers sought

ARREST warrants have been issued against two men who carjacked a man in Larnaca on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the statement given to police by the 48-year-old betting shop owner, his car was stopped on Griva Digenis Avenue before he was physically assaulted, with his attackers then driving off in his luxury car.

The vehicle was later found abandoned in the Aradippou industrial area, minus the €1,000 which the man claims was inside.

The attackers are believed to be Poles, aged 28 and 35.

Patrol falls further

A FURTHER drop in petrol prices on the island should be expected soon, Commerce Minister Antonis Paschalidis said yesterday.

The minister said the price of crude oil has been falling recently, but that it has taken some time for prices to come down at petrol stations.

Paschalidis also said that the Competition Commission has taken up several queries over cases of bread price increases.

The price of bread went up when petrol prices were high and has not since been reduced, despite the drop in the cost of oil.

Inflation rate eases

THE inflation rate eased to 5.4% in August, from 5.6% in July, although it remained above the 2.5% recorded in August 2007.

The decrease is mainly attributed to the drop in international oil prices, which appears to have had an immediate impact on the Consumer Price Index (CPI).

“This is mainly due to increases in the prices of certain fresh vegetables and electricity. Decreases have been recorded in the prices of petroleum products and certain clothing items,” an official government announcement said.

For the period January-August 2008, the CPI recorded an increase of 5% compared to the corresponding period in 2007.
